The Liebster Award

The Liebster Award

I’m pretty new to travel blogging in the grand scheme of things, so when I recently heard of the Liebster Award it was most definitely for the first time. So, I began to look into it; searching the hashtag on twitter and pinterest and it seems it has been about for ages. Just me late to the party then!

The main principle of the award is recognition for new bloggers. It serves as a great way to network in the blogging community and means your blog is recognised and shared with others in a chain. All in all it’s a lovely idea and a great way to discover new blogs!

How does the Liebster Award work?

Firstly I want to give Lauren, my ‘nominator’, a shout out. I am truly flattered that you considered me and my new blog as one of your five nominees. Thank you for taking the time to look at Laurahatesmushrooms.com and tweeting me.
travel_your_dreams_tweetLauren is 19-years old and is about to embark on the trip of a lifetime to Thailand for 4 weeks backpacking. You can follow her adventures on her blog here: travelyourdreams.co.uk and via her twitter and instagram. Give her a follow ?

So deep breath, and on to my answers:

1. How long have you been blogging & what made you start?

I started blogging properly in February 2016 mainly because so many people always ask me for my travel advice like “Laura, you’ve been to New York where’s the best place to see the views..?” etc. So I decided to create a place to note all the tips and tricks I’ve learnt along the way down. And here it is Laurahatesmushrooms.com

2.What does blogging mean to you?

Blogging is a way for me to be productive in my spare time. I have a busy career in the fashion industry and I live in central London but I use blogging as a way to do something for me. I love to travel so why not tell other people about it!

3. What is your favourite travel quote?

I didn’t think I had one but on further thought I think it’s this:

the world is a book travel quote

 4. Out of all the destinations you’ve visited, where is your favourite & why?

New York City, hands down. I dreamt of visiting the city as a teenager and when I finally did aged 21 I was blown away. I’ve spent a lot of time there now so I know it well, but it is constantly changing so there is something new to discover every time. I love America, and I love the attitude of New Yorkers. My life long ambition is to live there someday. (See my post of 5 different things to do in NYC here).

5. Is there anywhere in the world that you wouldn’t visit or would avoid going to?

Not wanting to offend anyone as I know it’s a top bucket list destination for a lot of travellers but, in all honesty, Australia has never appealed to me – although I know it is a beautiful, big country. Let’s just say I have a huge fear of spiders and I am not sure I am ready to face them!

6. Where was your most recent destination?

I’ve just come back from a trip to Amsterdam. I have 2 friends from university who live there now, so I go over to visit a couple of times a year. Amsterdam is a place I feel comfortable: I could see myself living there. It’s a really fun city – and I mean beyond the usual preconceptions of hen do’s and lads holidays. There’s a great amount of culture with some incredible museums and galleries. I also love the shopping scene; so many lovely independent stores for homeware, lifestyle and jewellery. Look out for my post on the shops not to miss coming soon. But most of all I love the freedom of cycling everywhere!

7. Do you love or despise the actual travel part of your trips? (E.g. flights)

I actually really enjoy the flights part. The getting to and from the airport not so much (especially as I live in central London and don’t have a car, public transport can be costly and take a long time). Once I am at the airport though I take the attitude that my trip has started and I begin to get excited.

I also love flying. I’ve been lucky enough in the past to fly Business on BA and enjoy that level of luxury. Even in economy though I’m happy as I have my little flight tips and tricks to make it as comfortable as possible (read my post here: long haul travel tips). Oh and I love a back-to-back movie session on a long haul!

8.What is your best packing tip?

Don’t bother taking those heels. You aren’t going to wear them!

9. What is your most essential item that you cannot travel without?

Sad to say it but that would be my iPhone. Firstly because it can be my camera, and in fact on my whole trip last year to Copenhagen it was! Also I use a lot of apps to make my travel experience easier and fun such as Foursquare which I use to make personal lists of restaurants and bars which I have checked out before my trip (you can see my profile here:   ). I also love Apple maps as it shows the icons for shops/restaurants even when offline and I have my most frequent airline’s apps downloaded to store my mobile boarding passes.

10. Do you travel for the weather, partying, culture, escapism or other?

I travel for the experiences- to open my eyes to other places. I truly am fascinated. But due to working in a fast paced fashion office my holiday time is limited so must be planned wisely. This means I like to relax, get some sun on my skin and escape my day to day, which all has an effect on the destination

11. Where are you traveling to next?

This year is a big one for family birthdays – my mom turned 60 in May and my step-dad is 50 in November. Over Christmas we decided on a family holiday to celebrate, bearing in mind we haven’t travelled or been on holiday together for almost 16 years! My parents were really keen to go on another cruise, so we are off to Athens to embark on a week cruising around the Mediterranean with Princess Cruises. Some of the stop off points are amazing and have been on my bucket list for years; Santorini, Montenegro and Naples! Needless to say I am very excited. (Read more about my 2016 travel plans here).
